50 pairs a style — test before you commit

Most factories will not open a line for 50 pairs. That minimum is the reason small brands never find out whether a design works.

Why the number is 50

A run below that stops being manufacturing and becomes sampling: the set-up time, material handling and QC effort are the same whether you make 50 pairs or 500, so the per-pair cost climbs steeply below it. At 50 we can still build the run properly, check it against the approved sample, and give you a real shoe to sell.

What it buys you is information. Fifty pairs in one market tells you whether the last fits your customer, whether the colour reads the way you expected, and whether the price holds — before you commit to a full range.

What small runs cannot avoid

We would rather be straight about the constraints than take an order we cannot deliver on:

  • Material minimums. Mills sell leather, suede and some textiles in minimum quantities that can exceed 50 pairs. On a 50-pair run you either choose a material already in stock, accept the minimum and hold the balance, or pick a synthetic.
  • Tooling. A new moulded sole is a per-style cost. At 50 pairs it is spread over very few units, so an existing sole unit is usually the sensible route.
  • Per-pair price. Small runs cost more per pair than bulk. That is arithmetic, not negotiation.

How small runs usually grow

The pattern we see: one style at 50 pairs, approved and sold, then the same style reordered in two or three colourways, then a second style added. By the third order the material minimums stop being a constraint because the volume absorbs them. Starting small is not a compromise on quality — it is a way of buying the evidence before you spend on the range.

Questions buyers ask about this

Is 50 pairs per style or per colourway?

Per style and colourway. Two colourways of the same style are two runs and are scheduled and priced separately.

Can we order 50 pairs of five different styles?

Yes, with the caveat that each style carries its own sampling and set-up. It is five small runs rather than one, and it is priced accordingly.

Does a small order mean lower quality?

No. The run is built and inspected against the same approved sample as a bulk order. What changes is the per-pair cost, not the standard.

Send the shoe you have in mind

A photo, a sketch or a tech pack is enough. You get construction options, indicative pricing and the MOQ back within 24 hours. Sampling a synthetic leather (PU) upper is USD 100 and takes around 15 days — and nothing goes into bulk until you have approved the shoe.
